Hot Water Cylinder Replacement in St Albans

A hot water cylinder usually gives plenty of warning before it fails. You might notice the hot water running out sooner than it used to, a damp patch or green staining around the base, a hissing or rumbling noise, or an immersion heater that keeps tripping. We replace vented and unvented cylinders across St Albans and Hertfordshire and can advise whether a like-for-like swap or an upgrade makes more sense for your home.

Types of cylinder we fit

  • Vented (open vented) cylinders fed from a cold water tank in the loft, a simple and reliable choice where the loft tank is staying
  • Unvented cylinders fed straight from the mains for strong, balanced pressure at every tap and shower. These must be fitted by a G3 qualified installer, and our engineers are qualified to do this.
  • Direct and indirect cylinders heated by an immersion heater, your boiler, or both
  • Solar and heat pump ready cylinders if you are planning renewables in the future

Swapping like for like or upgrading

If your water pressure is good and you are happy with how the system works, a new vented cylinder in the same position is the quickest and most cost-effective job. If you are fed up with weak showers, moving to an unvented cylinder can transform your hot water, and it frees up the loft by removing the cold water tank. We check your incoming mains pressure and flow rate before recommending this, because an unvented cylinder is only as good as the supply feeding it.

What the job involves

We drain down and remove the old cylinder, fit the new one with the correct valves and controls, reconnect it to your boiler and immersion, refill and vent the system, and test everything under working conditions. Unvented installations are registered with Building Control and come with the paperwork you need when you sell your home. Most replacements are completed in a day.

Common Questions About Cylinder Replacement

How long does a hot water cylinder last?

A good copper cylinder often lasts 15 to 20 years, but hard water shortens that. Leaks at the base, slow recovery and a rumbling noise are the usual signs it is reaching the end of its life.

Usually, yes, as long as your mains water pressure and flow are strong enough. We test both before recommending it. The upgrade removes the need for a loft tank and gives mains pressure hot water.

Yes. Unvented cylinders should be serviced every year by a G3 qualified engineer to check the safety valves and expansion vessel, and most manufacturers require this for the warranty.

Most cylinder replacements are finished in a day, so you are usually without hot water for a few hours only. If you have an electric shower or a combi elsewhere, we plan around it.
