Water Softener Installation in St Albans and Hertfordshire

St Albans sits in one of the hardest water areas in the country. If you have ever descaled a kettle every few weeks, scrubbed white marks off a shower screen or had a boiler engineer mention scale in the heat exchanger, you have seen what it does. A properly sized water softener stops that scale forming in the first place, which protects your boiler, hot water cylinder, taps and appliances.

How we install your softener

  • A survey of where the rising main enters the property, usually under the kitchen sink, in a utility room or a garage
  • Advice on the right size of unit for the number of people in your home and your water use
  • Installing the softener with an isolation bypass valve, so the supply can be kept on if the unit ever needs servicing
  • Fitting a non-return valve and connecting the drain and overflow in line with water regulations
  • Leaving a hard water drinking tap at the kitchen sink, which is the recommended approach for drinking and cooking water
  • Setting the unit up, testing the water hardness before and after, and showing you how to add salt

Why it matters for your heating system

Limescale is a real cost in a hard water area. A thin layer on a heat exchanger or immersion element makes it work harder to heat the same water, and it is one of the most common reasons we see noisy boilers and slow hot water. Softened water also means less soap and cleaning product, and far less time spent descaling.

Replacing or repairing an existing softener

If you already have a softener that is leaking, using too much salt or no longer softening, we can service it, repair the valve head or replace the unit. Where the old unit has been fitted without a bypass valve, we add one while we are there.

Not sure a softener is right for you? We also fit scale reducers and filters, and our water treatment page explains the options. Call 01727 620 195 for honest advice and a fixed price.

Common Questions About Water Softeners

Is softened water safe to drink?

Softened water contains a small amount of added sodium, so we always fit a separate hard water tap at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. This is the standard advice, especially for making up baby formula.

It depends on the size of the household and how hard the water is, but most homes use one or two bags of block salt a month. We set the unit up to suit your usage so it does not waste salt.

It needs to go on the incoming mains supply before it branches off, so the usual spots are under the kitchen sink, in a utility room or in a garage. We check the options during the survey.

Yes. Softened water stops new limescale forming in your boiler, cylinder and pipework. It does not remove heavy existing scale, so if your system is already badly scaled we may recommend a powerflush first.
