Outside Tap Installation in St Albans

An outside tap saves a lot of trips to the kitchen with a watering can, and makes washing the car, the bikes or the dog a lot easier. It is a small job, but it is one that needs doing properly. An outside tap has to have the right protection against backflow and it needs to survive a Hertfordshire winter without splitting.

How we fit your outside tap

  • Tapping into the cold supply at the most practical point, usually near the kitchen sink or utility
  • Fitting an internal isolation valve so you can turn the tap off and drain it down before a frost
  • Fitting a double check valve, which the water regulations require to stop garden water being drawn back into your drinking supply
  • Drilling neatly through the wall, sealing around the pipe and fixing the tap securely to the brickwork
  • Insulating any exposed pipework and testing for leaks

Replacing a leaking or frozen outside tap

If your existing tap drips, will not turn off fully or split over the winter, we can replace it and add an isolation valve at the same time if there is not one already. A split pipe inside the wall can go unnoticed for a while, so if you see damp on the inside wall behind an outside tap, it is worth getting it checked quickly.

Hot and cold outside taps

For washing cars, horses or paving, a mixer outside tap with hot and cold is very handy. We can run a hot supply from your system and fit a thermostatic or standard mixer outside tap, with the same backflow protection.

Winter tip

Before the first frost, turn off the isolation valve inside, open the outside tap to drain it, and disconnect the hose. It takes a minute and prevents the most common outside tap repair we get called to in January.

Common Questions About Outside Taps

How long does it take to fit an outside tap?

Most outside taps take about an hour to fit where the cold supply is close to the wall. Longer runs or awkward access can take a little longer.

Yes. Water regulations require backflow protection on an outside tap so contaminated water from a hose cannot be drawn back into the mains supply. We fit one as standard.

Almost always. The simplest position is close to where the cold main runs inside, but we can run pipework further if you want the tap somewhere specific in the garden.
